A voluntary pact from 2006 held soy-driven deforestation in the Amazon near zero. It was abandoned in January 2026. A study in Science projects at least 1.4 million hectares of extra deforestation by 2036.
The claim is the opening line of "Amazon soy pact collapse could add 1.4 million hectares of deforestation by 2036", phys.org, 2026-07-17, by Issam Ahmed, reporting a 2026 study in Science by Lisa Rausch and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, DePaul University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The article gives 745 million tonnes of CO₂ and a $200 million lawsuit by soy farmers against traders. Monica Piccinini (@yourvoiz_org) posted the same line on X, 2026-07-18. The Science paper itself has not been read.
